Why Sensory Play Matters

When the clouds roll in and outside play is paused, Pudding’s favorite way to explore is through a rainy-day-themed sensory bin! This activity doesn’t just keep little hands busy; it helps develop fine motor skills, encourages imaginative storytelling, and provides a calming tactile experience.

shopping_basket Materials Needed

  • Large shallow plastic tub
  • Uncooked rice (dyed blue!)
  • Smooth river stones
  • Small toy umbrellas or boats
  • Droppers or small spoons
  • Cotton balls (for clouds)

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Prepare the “Water”

Dye your rice with a few drops of blue food coloring and vinegar. Let it dry completely before pouring it into the tub to create your rainy ocean base.

2

Build the Landscape

Add the river stones to one side to create a “shoreline.” Place the cotton ball clouds at the edges for a cozy atmosphere.

3

Add Interactive Elements

Place boats, spoons, and droppers. Encourage your child to “pour the rain” using the rice over the toy boats.
